Why did you decide to become a Czech language teacher, and how did you end up on that career path?
It all started in 2006 as a way to earn some extra money alongside my job; my first students were European volunteers. I enjoy being able to help foreigners find their feet, both with the Czech language and with life in the Czech Republic. At the same time, every lesson is an opportunity for me to learn about different cultures, meet new people and hear about their experiences.
Do you have any experience of living abroad?
As a university student, I spent a semester at the University of Turin in Italy. As well as gaining a decent knowledge of Italian, I came away with a keen interest in Italian culture, fashion, the visual arts, films and the general art of living. Since 2013, I have also been visiting Helsinki regularly, where I am fascinated by the way society functions, the ever-present greenery and blueberry soup.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I enjoy embroidery, going to exhibitions, spending time having a coffee with friends, and chatting with my loved ones. I find cooking the best way to relax.
If you were to live somewhere else, where would you choose and why?
Helsinki in the summer because of the white nights, Sicily in the winter because of the food and the weather.
What do you consider to be the most important aspect of working with students?
Genuine interest, respect and patience.
What do you enjoy most about being a teacher?
I enjoy seeing how the students improve bit by bit, lesson by lesson.
What has been your best experience as a teacher?
My very first student of Czech, Paola from Palermo, later introduced me to my future husband.
